5 Ways To Solve Word 2010 Problems

                              Safe Mode

Word 2010 includes a Safe Mode, it appears in other version of the suite. To enter this mode you just have to hold the Ctrl key when you are entering on the application. The following image will appear:

Word Safe Mode have the following behaviour:
  • No templates can be saved.
  • Any menu customization's are not loaded and cannot be saved.
  • Don’t open recovered documents automatically.
  • Command line options are ignored except ‘\a’ and ‘\n’.
  • You cannot save preferences.
  • Additional features, also known as add-ins, are not loaded.
You can also use the ‘/safe’ command line option for using this mode.

Disable Macros

A Word document, can include macros. A way to prevent the execution is holding the Shift Key when the document is loading. This way Word will open the document but not execute any macros. As many of you have noticed, this can be used as a security measure for files downloaded from Internet or any other suspicious source.

Repair Registry

Word, as almost every software, can be opened using command line options. The ‘/r’ switch makes Word to rewrite its Registry entries. Word uses the registry for example to store information about customization, where to find files, etc, therefore if these data changes can make the program to not work properly.
To do this press WinKey + R, type winword /r and press Enter.

Office then will inform you about the process:

Using the ‘/a’ switch

If you open Word using the ‘/a’ switch, the program will not load add-ins and global templates. The settings files cannot be read or modified. If this makes Word opens correctly you can know that you are experiencing a problem either with your normal template or some add-ins.

Using the ‘/m’ switch

Word has a feature known as AutoExec.  With this you can configure a Macro that is going to be executed every time Word is opened. If a problem happens with this macro the program could not start. Using the ‘/m’ switch will prevent the execution.
