                         Normal Dotm file

Normal.dotm is the template upon which all new blank documents are based. It opens whenever you start Microsoft Office Word 2013 and it includes default styles and customization's that control the basic look of your document. ... In versions of Word prior to Word 2007, the Normal template used to be called normal.dot.



                        Global template in Word

Normal.dotm (Normal.dot in Word versions previous to Word 2007) is a special global document template created and used by Word. It is a global template, and it is often used as a document template. Unlike other global templates, Normal.dotm / normal.dot must be in the User Templates folder.



                       Change a template in Word

To load an existing template so you can edit it, do the following:
  1. Choose Open from the File menu, or click on the Open tool on the toolbar. You will see the Open dialog box.
  2. In the Files of Type pull-down list, select Document Template (*.dot). ...
  3. Select the template file you want to edit.
